The Orchidaceae is one of the largest families of flowering plants, with about 850 genera and 17,000 species. Most are epiphytic herbs, but some are terrestrial, lithophytic or saprophytic. Mostly found in tropical forests, but occur on every continent except Antarctica. Vanilla is a well known edible orchid used as an aromatic flavoring.
Vanilla planifolia (F.E. Köhler, 1883-1914)
