Kaempferia rotunda
(Zingiberaceae)

Kaempferia rotunda, or Asian crocus, is a small, shade loving plant, 2-3 feet tall.  Will tolerate partial to full sun in cooler climates.  Beautifully patterned foliage makes an excellent ground cover.  Leaves die back and plant becomes dormant during the winter.  Blooms appear directly from the ground from March to May in Puerto Rico, followed by foliage emergence.  Flowers resemble miniature 3-4 inch tall orchids, and are a brilliant white and purple color.
