Heliconia collinsiana is of a medium size, about 6-8 feet tall, and has spectacular solid red bracts with a frosty wax coating. The leaf undersides and pseudostems also have a heavy waxy coating. The fruits are large and attractive, first yellow, then ripening to a bright purple-blue color. Blooms from July to September in Puerto Rico.
