Aquifoliaceae (holly family)

The Aquifoliaceae is a family of about 400 species, most of which are found in the tropics.  The most abundant genus is Ilex, and is well known in Europe and North America for the ornamental hollies, Ilex aquifolium (English holly) and Ilex opaca (American holly).  Maté (Ilex paraguariensis) is an important holly species utilized in South America as a stimulating beverage.
