Grenada is known as the Spice Island of the Caribbean, and produces one third of the world's nutmeg.  Other spices produced here include cloves, cinnamon, mace, ginger and turmeric.  The country consists of three islands, Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.  One sixth of the island is preserved as parks and natural wildlife sanctuaries.  Grenada achieved independence from Britain in 1974.
